Wardrobe Basics Part I: 10 Items to Invest In

Some women hate to pay too much for their clothing, and that is ok. But if you really want to be stylish and smart, invest in some items that will last you and keep you looking great season after season. That is right- these things never go out of style. They are what stylists refer to as “classic pieces”. Choose quality over quantity and you will only have to fork out your hard earned cash once instead of over and over again for items that will wear poorly.

#1. Foundation Undergarments

#2. The Little Black Dress or Equivalent

You need something that looks great on you, that you feel comfortable in, and that you can throw on in an instant.

#3. The Trench Coat

You can wear a trench with jeans and a T-shirt and be out the door, looking cool and casually elegant. You can even pull off an evening look.

Consider your trench coat an investment piece and opt for one of high quality. Trench coats come in a variety of cuts, fabrics, and colors, so find one that flatters you perfectly. If you live in a warmer climate, find one without a lining, or better yet, a detachable lining. A hemline that hits right below or right above the knee is universally flattering. If you like to play it safe, choose a neutral color like beige or black. A striking red or navy blue works well too, as long as the colors are appropriate for your skin tone.

#4. Cashmere Cardigan or Sweater

Invest in a nice cashmere top that makes you feel great and put together every time you put it on. It is more expensive but it will look 10 times better than your standby hoodie and you will feel more like the classy woman you are. A neutral is always a good option, especially black.

#5. Structured Light Jacket

The structured jacket can be worn all the time. It is great for throwing over a t-shirt and jeans. It will give you a polished, put together look in seconds. Make sure you pick a quality jacket with a good fit.

#6. Overcoat

If you live in a mild climate, a nice overcoat is probably lower on your list of necessities. On the other hand, if you live in a cold climate, you will be wearing a heavy coat for half a year (or more). Unless you want to walk around looking frumpy for the whole winter, take time to choose a stylish and quality made coat. A classic wool coat will last for years to come.

#7. Denim

A great pair of jeans can be one of the hardest items to find, but how much would you pay for one pair of jeans that make you look incredible? Invest in a pair of jeans that will last you a long time, because if they are your favorite, you will be reaching for them time and time again. Make sure you have one pair of long dressy jeans to wear with heels, preferable in a dark wash, and one pair to wear with flats or sneakers.

#8. Pants

Always choose high quality pants. If you can only afford one pair of quality pants, choose a black pair, in a firm skimming fabric wool blend. Find a pair that fits you perfectly and always return to the same line to repurchase.

#9. Skirts

If you are not that in to skirts, keep at least one high quality black wool blend skirt in your closet. You can pair it with anything to look instantly dressy. Pencil and A-line skirts are the best shapes. Choose a flattering hemline, either at your knee, right above, or right below.

#10. Jewelry
